2. Components

The Work Sharp EDC Pivot Plus Knife Sharpener integrates several key components for comprehensive blade maintenance:

  • Convex Carbide Sharpening Slots: Two slots with carbide abrasives for quickly establishing an edge.
  • Ceramic Honing Slots: Two slots with fine-grit ceramic rods for refining and polishing the edge.
  • Pivot Response Switch: A red switch located on the top that engages or disengages the pivot response feature for the carbide sharpeners.
  • Tapered Diamond Rod: A retractable rod for sharpening serrated edges, gut hooks, and small tools.

3. Configuració

The Work Sharp EDC Pivot Plus Knife Sharpener requires minimal setup. Ensure the sharpener is clean and free of debris before use. Always use the sharpener on a stable, flat surface or hold it firmly in your hand, away from your body.

4. Instruccions de funcionament

Follow these steps to sharpen your knives effectively. Always exercise caution when handling sharp objects.

4.1. Sharpening Straight Edge Blades (Convex Carbide)

  1. Locate the Convex Carbide sharpening slots (typically marked or the more aggressive side).
  2. For initial sharpening or significant edge repair, ensure the Pivot Response switch (red tab) is in the unlocked position (allowing the carbide elements to pivot). For more controlled sharpening, you may lock the pivot.
  3. Place the heel of the blade into the carbide slot.
  4. With light, consistent pressure, pull the blade through the slot from heel to tip. Maintain a consistent angle.
  5. Repeat this motion 3-5 times, alternating sides, until a burr is felt along the entire edge.

4.2. Honing Straight Edge Blades (Ceramic Hone)

  1. After using the carbide sharpeners, move to the Ceramic Honing slots (typically the finer, white elements).
  2. Place the heel of the blade into the ceramic slot.
  3. With very light pressure, pull the blade through the slot from heel to tip.
  4. Repeat this motion 5-10 times, alternating sides, to refine the edge and remove the burr. The goal is a smooth, polished edge.

4.3. Sharpening Serrated Blades and Fine Tools (Tapered Diamond Rod)

  1. Extend the Tapered Diamond Rod from the sharpener body.
  2. For serrated blades, match the curve of the diamond rod to the curve of each serration.
  3. Gently push and pull the rod through each serration, sharpening only the beveled side. Avoid sharpening the flat side of the serration.
  4. For fine edge tools or fishhooks, use the appropriate section of the tapered rod to gently abrade the edge until sharp.

5. Manteniment

5.1. Neteja

  • After each use, gently brush away any metal filings or debris from the sharpening slots using a soft brush or cloth.
  • The ceramic rods can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap if necessary. Ensure they are completely dry before storage.
  • Do not immerse the entire sharpener in water.

5.2. Emmagatzematge

  • Store the sharpener in a dry place, away from extreme temperatures and humidity.
  • Ensure the Tapered Diamond Rod is fully retracted before storage to prevent damage.

6.1. Knife Not Getting Sharp

  • Insufficient Passes: Ensure you are making enough passes through the carbide sharpeners (3-5 passes per side) to establish a new edge.
  • Inconsistent Pressure/Angle: Try to maintain light, consistent pressure and a steady angle as you pull the blade through.
  • Skipping Honing: Always follow carbide sharpening with ceramic honing to refine the edge and remove the burr.
  • Worn Abrasives: Over time, sharpening elements can wear out. If performance significantly degrades, consider replacing the sharpener.

6.2. Damage to Blade

  • Pressió excessiva: Using too much pressure, especially with the carbide sharpeners, can damage the blade edge. Use light pressure.
  • Angle incorrecte: While the sharpener guides the angle, ensure the blade is properly seated in the slot.
